Five Reasons to Shop Thrift Stores

Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on LinkedInPin on PinterestEmail this to someoneShare on TumblrPrint this page

thrift shop2

By Robyn Alright

Walk into a thrift shop and you are most likely greeted with a smell that resembles molded toast and the color brown. Once you get used to it, you have entered the land of infinite style possibilities!  Anyone who has a unique sense of personal style understands how invaluable the thrift store is.

Sadly, there are those that turn their nose up at the thought of shopping at a thrift store. I feel sorry for them, but that means there is more for the rest of us! If for some reason you are not yet a thrift store convert, perhaps these five reasons will help you to get with the program.

Find Items That You Can’t Find Elsewhere
When you are ready to add some uniqueness to your wardrobe, head to the thrift store. Adding one-of-a-kind items to your closet will greatly enhance your style. You will turn heads with creative clothing that can’t be found in mainstream fashion.

Vintage Lover’s Jackpot
If your style has more of a throwback vibe, the thrift store is where you want to be. You are likely to find clothing from many recent decades. Personally, I love vintage accessories! Old-school accessories can add just the right touch to your outfit. Also, let us not forget about costumes. The thrift store provides a wide selection of items that can be used for themed parties, charity events and Halloween.

fashon design2

Clothing Designers Paradise
A clothing designer in a thrift store can be like a kid in the candy shop! There are endless creative possibilities. In the right hands, an item from the thrift store can be redesigned into something exceptional. Even an amateur designer can find quality pieces to alter and elevate.

Get Cool Things for Your Home
Thrifting is not just for fashion design, it is also for interior design. Update your home with items from the thrift shop. You can create an environment that others will envy. You might even find an antique treasure that is worth far more than what you paid for it.

save money

Fun Items at Affordable Prices.
It’s a no-brainer, you save money. Isn’t that ALWAYS a great thing? Shopping at the thrift store is a great way to try a new look without making a huge investment in clothing. Go wild trying new things. It will not hurt your pocket book!

Have fun poppin’ tags!

Non-Lethal Options for Self-Defense

Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on LinkedInPin on PinterestEmail this to someoneShare on TumblrPrint this page

self defense2

By Robyn Alright

Ladies, it is time we talk about our safety. Everyday, there are horrid stories all over the world of women being attacked, abused and kidnapped. We have to take measures to protect ourselves and it is time we take our safety seriously.

Recently, I attended a women’s conference and came across the booth of a company called Female Defense Products. I was immediately intrigued. While the majority of the booths catered to make-up, beauty products and clothes (and there is nothing wrong with that), I thought it was very smart to have a booth about women’s safety.

Emily is the Sales Manager at Female Defense Products. The information she shared was very valuable.

Female Defense Products was founded by a young entrepreneur named Madison Ryffel. Madison is a graduate of Texas Christian University. As a college student, she was alarmed at how frequently women were assaulted and attacked. Madison saw an opportunity to help women protect themselves and raise awareness. Thus, Female Defense Products was born.

At the conference, I spoke with Emily and Charles. I’ve always been interested in a stun gun. However, with my periodic clumsiness, I was concerned that I would end up shocking myself. Emily explained that there are products that have a two-step process for activating shock. This decreases the chance of hurting yourself while trying to protect yourself.

When it comes to your safety, there are plenty of non-lethal options to keep in mind. Here are a few products to consider and they can all be found on

The Guard Dog iStun

istun phone image

This clever device looks just like a real phone!  The design provides a discreet way to carry a stun gun. It is stylish, lightweight and packs power.  The iStun can also be used as a decoy if you are robbed for your cell phone. Hand the robber the iStun. They will be disappointed later to know that the phone is fake but, that is what they get.

SabreRed Drink Test Kit

This drink test is easy to carry and easy to use.  This product tests for the “date rape” drug which can include the chemicals GHB or Kematine. Place drops of your beverage on the designated areas of the test. If either area changes colors, then the “date rape” drug has been detected. The SabreRed Drink Test Kit can be an important tool in preventing sexual assault.

Mace KeyGuard Pepper Spray

pepper spray

Pepper spray does not disappoint. Spray this in your attackers face and it will cause them extreme discomfort. The product causes the skin to burn, eyes to shut and disrupts the respiratory system. Please keep pepper spray out of the reach of children.  If you come in contact with pepper spray by accident, immediately was the affected area with cool water and get fresh air as soon as possible.

Female Defense Products has made it even easier to protect yourself by offering 20% off your next order. Use code:FDP20. I am unsure how long this offer will last, but it would be wise to take advantage as quickly as possible. Stay stylish and stay safe!

21 Ways to Practice Self-Care

Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on LinkedInPin on PinterestEmail this to someoneShare on TumblrPrint this page

self care

By Robyn Alright

I used to run myself raggedy. I thought that taking a break equated to being unproductive. I’ve learned that quite the opposite is true. Taking a break and treating yourself can actually increase and maintain productivity. It also keeps you from experiencing burn-out. This is why self-care is so important. Self-care can help you to focus, manage your emotions and possibly prevent you from slapping the hell out of that annoying co-worker.

We give so much to our families, our jobs and our community that we sometimes forget to give to ourselves. One cannot pour from an empty cup. To help recharge your mental batteries, here are 21 easy and cost-effective ways to practice self-care.  Let’s stay sane and energized.

  • Buy yourself some flowers.
  • Visit an art museum.
  • Walk around a farmers market.
  • Get some henna or a temporary tattoo (or a real one).
  • Meditate or pray.

  • Write yourself a love letter.
  • Look through your favorite fashion magazine or blog (cough,, cough).
  • De-clutter your surroundings.
  • Blast your favorite song and start dancing.
  • Sing out loud.

  • Go for a walk in a park or on the beach.
  • Draw, doodle or paint.
  • Watch funny videos or motivational TED talks on YouTube.
  • Fire up some incense or light your favorite scented candle.
  • Give yourself a mani-pedi.

  • Make yourself your favorite cup of tea or coffee.
  • Cook your favorite meal.
  • Practice yoga or just stretch.
  • Try a new hairstyle.
  • Take a bubble bath.
  • Write a poem.

Stay well my friends. Don’t forget to take care of yourself. You are important.

Why I Got Rid of All (most) of My Clothes

Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on LinkedInPin on PinterestEmail this to someoneShare on TumblrPrint this page

ra shot 3a

One evening, as I was preparing to attend a networking event, I faintly asked myself, “What the hell am I going to wear?” I began to creep through my closet like a predator on the prowl for its prey. With all of the items I possessed, I only came up with three options and two of those options no longer fit (imagine stressed emoji here). Nevertheless, I got all dolled up and had a great time at the event.

Upon returning home, I took another good look at my closet. Truthfully, I had not done so in a while. Then it came to me like an epiphany: I didn’t like my clothes. The irony of this statement hit me like a ton of bricks being that I write for a style blog. The deeper meaning behind “I didn’t like my clothes” was simply that my personal style had changed. The items I owned no longer represented how I viewed myself.

Midway 2016, I experienced a HUGE shift in my personal growth. I had a big-ass revelation that I had been selling myself short and that I was too talented for my current situation. I made some major changes, took some huge risks and got a tattoo.  I took a leap of faith and set out to accomplish some lifelong goals and dreams. This journey is still fresh for me. I’ve realized that in just a few months, a person can change a great deal.

As I changed, my style changed. My previous look represented someone who acquiesced to the social standards of my environment. I realized that I suppressed my inner creative rebel. I dressed to impress others and according to the code. This code was killing my natural coolness. I allowed my environment to suppress my authenticity.  Having a new found appreciation for my uniqueness, I needed to express that through my sense of style. My brand had changed and I had to do something about it. Style is a way of communicating who you are without saying a word. Tell the truth about yourself.  It was time for me to rediscover my truth. It started with getting rid of old things that did not represent the new me.

style truth quote

One Saturday, I got all the way up and attacked my closet like it had talked about my momma. Clothes were flying everywhere. It was a battle. It was mayhem. I was victorious. Someone could have handed me a championship belt and I would have strutted around asking people if they could smell what I was cooking. Upon completion of my victory dance, I gathered up my clothes and donated them to a local charity. It was important to me to use my purging to be a blessing to someone else. Giving is a rewarding experience.

I had given away about 80% of my closet. Anxiety consumed me initially, but then I saw this as an opportunity to rebuild my wardrobe with the attitude that less is more. I am making a decision to exercise quality over quantity and I could not be happier.

Why You Should Create a Vision Board

Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on LinkedInPin on PinterestEmail this to someoneShare on TumblrPrint this page

Alright, ladies and gents. We’ve had the countdown, the kiss and the toast to welcome the New Year. 2017 is here whether you like it or not! Remember those goals you set for yourself a few days ago? It is time to get down to business and put your plans into action. A very creative way to get things rolling is to create a vision board.

A vision board is a visual representation of your hopes, dreams and aspirations. The purpose of a vision board is to help you focus on your goals and keep you optimistic through the process of achieving them. A vision board should contain images that inspire you. These images are set to remind you of you mission and ambitions. An effective vision board is more than just pictures of cute shoes or celebrity crushes. Your board should display the images that motivate you to improve yourself. It should not be a collection of random items.

Before you create your vision board, it is important to clearly define what your goals are. Take enough time to examine your priorities. Would you like to advance your career, start a business or spend more time with the family? Be honest about your desires, personal or professional. Your goals must reflect what you want for yourself. Unfortunately, some people get caught up in keeping up with the Joneses.  Your vision board should show what YOU want to be, not what others think you should be. The idea is not to impress others. Your goals should reflect YOUR true objectives.

Once your goals are accurately defined, it is time to gather artwork. You can print images from the internet or cut them from magazines. Use pictures from photo albums if you like. Your board may also include positive words or quotes. A good idea is to place your face with the images of influential people you would like to meet. The possibilities are endless. No goal is too crazy. No dream is too big!

This may come as a surprise, but once you complete your vision board, you actually have to look at it. Often. What good is a vision board if you take the time to create it and hide it in your closet? Place your board in an area where it can be seen frequently. Keep the images as a constant reminder of what you want to accomplish. Don’t just look at it, LOOK at it. Absorb the pictures and imagine what it will feel like when you reach your goals. It can become addictive and it is quite magical.  Let your vision board be the artistic way to make your dreams a reality.

As you set out to achieve the best in 2017,  it is important to be flexible. Life has a way of throwing some curveballs. To ensure success, it is imperative to keep an open mind that is receptive to change. It is believed that Heraclitus, a Greek philosopher, stated that, “The only thing constant is life is change.” We must understand that as our lives evolve, so will our priorities. Know that you can edit your vision board whenever you deem necessary. Your vision board is not set in concrete. It is a malleable creation that you can change to fit your life. Don’t be afraid to add to it or take away from it.

Your vision board is only one of many steps in the goal reaching process. Use it as a catalyst to propel you into greatness.  Don’t be afraid to push a little harder. Try something new. Reach out to someone you wouldn’t normally contact. Attend that conference. Take the leap of faith. Use caution but be courageous! You are the only one that can execute your vision. Go for it!
