It is exciting to imagine ourselves starting resolutions on January 1. But, perhaps, we have it all wrong. Instead of thinking of things to start in 2018, maybe you should give more consideration to things that should be STOPPED in 2018.

The usual promises are often made like ‘I will stop smoking’ or ‘I will stop eating ice cream for dinner’ (If you do those things, you really should stop). Beyond these bad habits, there are other habits that could be damaging in a different way. In an effort to help you become the best version of yourself, here is a list of  bad habits to leave behind when entering New Year.

Stop Negative Self-Talk

You know that little voice in your head that tells you that you are good enough, smart enough or cute enough? Tell that voice to sit down and shut up. You are not taking that energy into 2018. Look, we all make mistakes. There will be times when you are angry and disappointed in yourself. While those emotions can’t always be ignored, that doesn’t mean that you have to start beating yourself up. Be on your own team even if no one else is.

If you start to feel negatively about yourself, don’t reinforce that feeling by speaking negatively about yourself. Acknowledge your feelings, take a deep breath (or three), then speak positively about yourself. Instead of saying ‘I’m so stupid”, say “I’m smart enough to figure this out.”  Instead of saying,” I hate the way I look”, try saying, “I love myself just the way I am.”  Keep repeating these positive sayings and you should see a change in your attitude.

Stop Procrastinating

2018 is the year to cancel your membership from the Procrastination Club. Don’t put this off. One of the main reasons we procrastinate is because we perceive that there is something unpleasant about the task we need to complete. To avoid this unpleasantness, we just keep putting off what we need to do. What tends to happen is that the situation gets worse because we did not give the issue the attention it needed early on.

How can you stop falling in to this pit?  Try doing a little bit at a time. Jump right in and start working on the issue one step at a time. Often we are intimidated by the size of a task that we give up attacking it altogether. But if you break the task down into smaller pieces and do a little bit each day, you would have successfully completed the job. Little by little you can accomplish a lot.

Stop Gossiping

Former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt said it best, “Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.” Don’t be small minded going in to this New Year. THINK before you speak about someone else. Is what you are saying True, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary and Kind? If not, it may be best to keep your mouth closed.

If you would not like anyone spreading gossip about you, then you probably should not spread gossip about others. Imagine that you were in an embarrassing situation. I bet you would want people to treat you kindly and  be respectful of your situation. If that is how you want to be treated, then that is how you should treat others.

Stop Damaging Relationships

There are some people you should probably just walk away from. For your physical, mental and spiritual health, just walk away. You deserve to feel good. You deserve to have people in your life that support you. Some people only want to drain your energy. They take and take and take without giving anything back in return. These people will leave you emotionally depleted and you should stay as far away from them as possible. This year, make it all about you. Protect your energy. Love yourself enough to walk away from people who hurt you.

Don’t worry about the future. You can survive without them.

Stop Doubting Yourself

We can be our own worst enemy. Whenever we are indecisive or if we tend to overthink, you can best believe that self-doubt is nearby. Self-doubt can be paralyzing. It can cause you to never take action on an idea and leave you feeling helpless. The best way to stop doubting yourself is by taking action.  Muster up some courage, believe in yourself and get to it. You may not get the results you want at first, but you will be stronger because of the experience.

Believing in yourself is probably the most powerful thing you can do for yourself in the New Year. You are filled with potential. Even if no one else believes in you, you must believe in yourself. Fire up that light that burns within. 2018 needs you to come in on beast mode. You got this.
